Megan Fox as Lara Croft?

Typically when I find a story on the Internet, I take considerable pains to credit the source. Given the viral nature of the Internet on how stories are spread, replicated and sometimes stolen, I think it’s important to give credit (and traffic) to the original work. With this story, I make an exception. Kotaku quoted a story from Psxextreme which in turn quoted a source on MeriStation (a Spanish gaming site) which seemed to be the source of the largely unsubstantiated rumor that Megan Fox would take up the mantle of Lara Croft for the next Tomb Raider movie, replacing Angelina Jolie in the titular role.

Rumor or no, fact or lie, it’s a delicious possibility. Megan Fox is arguably as hot as Angelina was in her hey day (pre-Brad, pre birth of children). She’s been ranked as #2 in AskMen.com’s top 99 women of 2009.  And many would argue she should take the top spot (#1 is Eva Mendes if you’re curious). Ms. Fox certainly has the ahem assets necessary for the role.

Despite Megan Fox’s attractiveness, she’ll have a lot to overcome if she gets the role of Lara Croft. When Angelina Jolie was first talked about as taking the role of English gentlewoman turned tomb explorer, there were many people who thought she was miscast. However, all that talk disappeared when the movies came out and now the role is almost synonymous with Jolie. To many people, Angelina Jolie *is* Lara Croft. It would be interesting to see whether Ms. Fox can make the role her own or she’ll be under Jolie’s considerable shadow.

As to whether the rumor is true? Who knows? One thing for sure, both Tomb Raider films did very well at the box office despite having lackluster stories. Given the fact that Hollywood is even making a film about GI Joe, a third Tomb Raider film isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
