One cool D&D resume

Haha. I love creative resumes even though I’ve rarely seen one in my 14+ years of corporate life. This one would definitely earn an interview from me. I would have a few pointed questions for him though, like why his Artist Block Saving Throw is so low and whether or not he really has a tumbling skill of 15?
Anyway, Sean, if you’re out there, good luck on your job search!
LARP: geeks in the woods?

I’ve been out of the RPG hobby for a while now, and I haven’t played a round of Dungeons & Dragons for at least a few years. D&D was undoubtedly a geeky hobby, but my friends and I enjoyed it. However, even *we* looked down on LARPers, those obsessive fools who wouldn’t restrain their role playing activities to the table top but had to act them out in the middle of the woods or elsewhere where they wouldn’t be taunted and made fun of. Scientists have recently begun analyzing 60 TBs of Everquest 2 data given to them by Sony. In analyzing the biggest data set of human interactions ever made publicly available, scientists have already come up with a number of interesting and a few amazing findings. The data includes about 4 years worth of server logs of 400,000 players and includes follow up demographic surveys of the players. Read more

Below are my favorite sci-fi / fantasy themed motivational speeches. I’m not sure if my list qualifies for a “best of” or “all time” embellishment, but I think these have to be up there. Read more
Is Hollywood desperate?

I’m a huge science fiction and fantasy fan (like this blog isn’t a dead giveaway), so when I see an announcement for a new movie that is based on a video game, cartoon or comic book, you can practically consider me a part of the captive audience. It won’t take a lot of convincing to get me to the theater as long as the movie is halfway good.
But here’s the thing, even a fanboy like me is appalled at some of the drek that Hollywood would like to be slinging at us. I’ve already given my thoughts here about what I think of the upcoming GI Joe and Street Fighter movies. I have little doubt they’re both going to be awful. Throw onto that pile the upcoming Prince of Persia film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the Dragonball live action film. Yep, I think they’re going to be terrible too. Read more
Armored bikini gallery
I found these pictures in my quest of trying to gather my chainmail bikini gallery. So, these fantasy babes are clad in plate, leather and scale but not chain. It’s obviously, not an all inclusive list, since there are literally millions of these pictures out on the Internet. I’m just showing a select few of my favorites. Read more
Chainmail bikini gallery
Truth in advertising up front: this really isn’t that great of a chainmail bikini gallery. If you search Google, Flickr and some of the other dozen image directories I’ve tried, your results for finding a true chainmail bikini picture isn’t that good. Surprisingly, you find a lot of pictures of real women attending Renaissance fairs and such dressed as their favorite fantasy femme fatale. While I give a lot of points for bravery, most of these women aren’t quite up to the fantasy standards I had in mind. Read more
Another top geek movies of all time
Lists of the top geek movies of all time have been done before. You’ll find one here, here and here. However, none of those lists really satisfied me. They seem to mix up cult movies with what I would consider a true geek film; it’s not enough that a film is a cult film, it has to be a geek cult film. Also, I never understood the criteria they used to put together their lists. Ultimately, a list of this sort comes down to opinion, but I think it’s reasonable to include the criteria you use to put a film on your list. Mine are below.
Want! Dragon Age

So I’ve been catching up on my gaming news and caught this on the Bioware web site. Apparently, Dragon Age is the spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate (”go for the eyes, Boo!”) I loved Baldur’s Gate semi-turn based, pause and attack type system and been itching to have a new game with this system. It doesn’t bother me that it’s single player, though I do hope that there will be character customization options available. Also in looking at the screens, it looks like you can have a party of sorts as well too.
Great games of 2009
2008 was an awful year for games if your primary platform of choice is the PC. Arguably, the best game of the year was Fallout 3, and admittedly, it was pretty good. However, 2008 was also the year that a number of high profile games just tanked. It wasn’t enough that Hellgate: London had to announce it was shutting down but also Tabula Rasa. And with this economy, a number of others seem to be following suit. If you’re tired of the fantasy genre (I didn’t have much interest in either Warhammer or Age of Conan), then having the two premier non-sword and fantasy MMOs go belly up equals a pretty bad year for me.
I’m hoping that all that bad karma in 2008 goes away at the start of this year. Here’s three titles I’m eagerly hoping will make a strong showing this year.
