Free games at Amazon

Amazon always seem to be quick to react to market trends. Amazon quietly introduced a new digital download service for video games. The download service targets casual gamers, those players who enjoy puzzles and simple arcade style games. These games are meant to fill 20-30 minutes at a time and don’t require high end hardware to run.
I’ve spent some time this morning looking around the Amazon game download site and saw what it has to offer. Pretty much, there’s nothing that’s up my alley. I’m more into MMOs and first person shooters, and you won’t find those on the 600 titles that Amazon list on its service. What you will find are games like Mr. Biscuits (detective game), Pageant Princess (beauty contestant sim) and Westward III: Gold Rush (play a prospector). The games are cheap ($6.99 to $9.99) and simple to download and install. To entice you further (and to demonstrate the quality of its service), Amazon also offers 3 free games for download.
Amazon has been watching the trends. Reuters recently published an in depth report that due to the recession, people were playing more video games. Video games have been one of the few bright spots in the economy, and the big winners in this category has been casual games. So while Amazon isn’t a threat (at least not yet) to Valve or Steam, it is going after a segment of the market that it feels is under-served. Casual games make up the fastest growing segment in video game purchases, so you have to admire Amazon’s business savvy.
