Many female gamers bisexual

Female gamersFor those of you men out there hoping to meet the girl gamer of your dreams in one of the myriad of MMOs out there, there’s good news. According to Scott Caplan, lead researcher at the University of Delaware, analysis of 60 TB of Everquest 2 data given to them by Sony revealed that female gamers compose up to 40% of the general gaming population. Now the bad news: many of those female gamers aren’t interested in the opposite sex.

Caplan theorizes that women who conform to traditional gender roles are put off by activities seen as masculine, whereas women who reject traditional gender roles are more likely to play MMOs. An accompanying survey to the study revealed an unusually high level of bisexuality among the women who took part in the study - over five times higher than the general population.

The Caplan study suggests that female gamers aren't to be taken lightly either in game or in real life.

What’s worse (at least to male gamers with ego issues) is that many female gamers will kick the average male player’s butt both virtually and in real life.  The study showed that female players were the most dedicated players, spending more time each day playing the game than their male counterparts. Moreover, female gamers were healthier than the general population, though this was drawn from self-reported levels of exercise and body mass index.

Also, many female gamers are taken. A high proportion of women reported playing the game with their romantic partner, indicating that gaming is an increasingly sociable activity akin to social networks like Facebook and Myspace.

Sorry guys, but if you’re looking for love, an online game isn’t where you’re going to find it.

Caplan concludes by stating:

What we think about men and women and video games may have been true 10 or 15 years ago, when there were mainly console video games or single-player games. I think a lot of our stereotypes are based on the way computer games have been, rather than where they’re going.
