Anthony Scott Oshea of Kentucky has been arrested by police for persuading an 11-year-old girl in Houston to e-mail nude pictures of herself from her Playstation 3 to his. Having gotten her to send him the pictures, Oshea then e-mailed them to people in at least five other states — all through his PS3. Oshea was arrested by Kentucky police near his home. Houston authorities say they will try to bring him to Texas for trial.
“People don’t realize how the Playstation is like a regular computer,” said Eric Devlin, the Texas prosecutor who has been leading the case. Devlin noted that the Playstation can be used with a keyboard and can send and receive email as easily as any other Internet-capable device.
Devlin said this is the first time his office has pursued a sex crime case involving a gaming console. Oshea, 24, is charged with three felony counts, including online solicitation of a minor and promotion of child pornography. One charge carries a maximum sentence of 99 years in prison.
It’s sad that the Playstation 3 now joins the Xbox as a gaming console used by sexual predators to gain access to their victims. Crimes of this nature have been unfortunately on the rise with three prominent cases occurring using the Xbox Live network earlier this year. Pedophiles have been drawn to video game networks because of the predominance of children using these networks and the belief that unlike chat rooms, they are not targeted by law enforcement.
