Mutant Chronicles

I heard about Mutant Chronicles, a movie based on a pen and paper RPG, a little while ago. I honestly didn’t pay much attention, reserving my time anticipating films like Watchmen, Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. I actually played Mutant Chronicles for a night back in the 90s. I don’t remember much of the game other than the fact that my character died really fast.
Seeing the trailer however made me put this film on the must see list. It’s gorgeous! I don’t remember the pen and pencil game having as detailed of a background as the film, but it may be due to the group I was playing with at the time. The film features a pretty good cast too: Ron Perlman, Thomas Jane, John Malkovich, and Devon Aoki among others.
The film takes place in the future where the earth and the nearby planets are virtually controlled by a few mega corporations. The corporations fight viciously amongst themselves to control ever dwindling resources that have been over exploited by mankind. In a battle, an errant shell breaks a seal unleashing a horde of mutant monsters which multiply quickly and destroy anything in their path. Constantine, the leader of the corporations, is about to abandon the planet when a secret monastic order approaches him and convinces him to send a select team to end the mutant scourge.
The film has a distinctivel steam punk look with the protagonists dressed up in uniforms much like you’d see in a World War I film. However, there’s some advanced technology too since you can see hover craft and futuristic buildings. Weapons look surprisingly low tech: mostly guns and swords. I think this film will be a sleeper hit and will exceed expectations.
Take a look at the trailer:

Looks interesting will have to check it out. Nice to see Ron Perlman doing something without prosthetics.
