Terminator Salvation

Somehow in my latest wrap-up of movies, I omitted Terminator Salvation. It wasn’t intentional. As someone who covers the sci-fi scene, I generally focus on those things, good and bad, that attracts my attention. For as big as this movie is, Terminator surprisingly has little in the way of unofficial press coverage - people just aren’t writing about this as much as they are about other movies. I’ve been inundated with articles and news items for Star Trek and Watchmen but Terminator Salvation coverage has been comparatively insignificant.
Terminator Salvation will be in theaters at around the same time as Star Trek, giving sci-fi fans a lot of options in the month of May. I wonder how much the official and grass roots marketing effort has been stunted by the now infamous outburst made by Christian Bale on the set. If you haven’t heard of it, take a look below. The audio was probably taken out of context but it just doesn’t put Christian Bale in the best of light.
Christian Bale having a “moment”:
Christian and his handers have made the rounds and apologized for the outburst. I’m sure Christian realized that he came off looking like a complete tool. Christian talked on the radio about his behavior:
Putting aside the whole outburst incident, how do I think the movie will do? Judging on the trailers that have been released (I must have been in a cave because I haven’t seen the last two until recently), I think the movie will do well. I still think Star Trek will be the runaway hit of 2009, but Terminator will be a very respectable movie. I predict the movie won’t do as well as Star Trek but will beat out the Watchmen in ticket sales. I wonder if the lack of non-official coverage of the film has to do with the fact that many think the film’s blockbuster status is a foregone conclusion. For a movie of this size, it has surprisingly little buzz.

Moon Bloodgood and Anton Yelchin both star in the Terminator film. Bloodgood also stars as Maya in the Legend of Chun Li and Yelchin stars as Chekov in Star Trek.
Christian Bale is an excellent choice for the role of John Conner, leader of the human resistance, and they’ve starred him opposite Bryce Dallas Howard (whom many sci-fi fans will remember as Gwen Stacy from the latest Spider-man movie). Also interesting are two other cast members who also star in some other notable films of 2009. Anton Yelchin, who’s cast as Kyle Reese, John Connor’s future father, also stars as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek. Moon Bloodgood is also in Terminator and I’m sure she’ll like us to forget that she’s also in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which just opened.
Anyway, take a look at the latest Terminator Salvation movie clip (third one released). I actually don’t like this one as much as the others since I don’t like the grungy rock music they used to accompany it:

T3 was somewhat weak compared to previous Ts. Though I’m still waiting for something interesting to happen.

What? I don’t understand. It’s all over the internet, and it was shown during the Superbowl.
The rant is old news. And boring. People need to find new and invented ways to spruce up their writing. There is more to Christian Bale than that stupid rant. Geesh! Talk about Terminator Salvation, good topic of discussion. Something intelligent. Everyone is getting like TMZ.
I personally liked the trailer. The best I’ve seen since the Dark Knight. I think the acting is intense by everyone from what I saw. Which needs to be. Bale should not be the only actor with intensity. Marcus looks like he can hold his own. Great. The movie will not be one-sided. As far as MCG, time will tell.
I only brought up the Christian Bale rant because of the chilling effect it had on marketing. You’re right, it’s not really interesting and it’s old.
I liked the other Terminator Salvation trailers more than I liked this one…this one left me cold.
As for Terminator Salvation not having buzz. I’ll stand by that. I just see so much more written about other movies. I’ve seen a lot more about Legend of Chun Li than just about anything else. Terminator Salvation will be a good movie…it has all the key ingredients, but that’s what makes it a foregone conclusion and why a lot of bloggers and writers haven’t picked up on it. Besides the Christian Bale losing cool angle, there’s just no controversy with it.
Star Trek and Watchmen get written about because people *hope* that both will be good, but won’t know for sure until they get released. Star Trek is a reboot and that’s risky for an established franchise. Watchmen have cat fights among license holders and the writer, and it’s a completely unknown IP for most the audience. Both these films provide lots of writer fodder that Terminator Salvation, for being so solid, just doesn’t provide.
